Collection: HMAS Fremantle
HMAS Fremantle, the lead ship of the Fremantle-class patrol boats, represented a major step forward in Australia’s patrol capability when she entered service in the late 20th century. Designed for coastal surveillance, fisheries and customs enforcement, and border protection, she frequently operated from Western Australian bases, patrolling vast stretches of ocean with a small, tightly knit crew. Fremantle’s class became synonymous with Australia’s modern maritime constabulary role, paving the way for successors like the Armidale and Arafura classes and cementing the port city’s name in RAN history.
