Collection: HMAS Choules

HMAS Choules is an amphibious Bay Class Landing Ship Dock (LSD), commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in December 2011. Originally serving with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary as RFA Largs Bay, the ship was acquired by Australia following a successful bid in 2011. Choules is a 16,000-tonne vessel capable of carrying over 300 troops, 23 Abrams tanks, 150 light trucks, and two landing craft. It is also equipped to operate Navy helicopters, including the MH-60R Seahawk and the Australian Army’s S-70A Black Hawk, making it a critical asset for amphibious operations and humanitarian missions.

Upon transfer to the RAN, Choules underwent extensive refits to suit Australian requirements, including overhauls of propulsion systems, upgrades to cooling and safety systems, and the installation of new equipment such as mexeflote pontoons and an aircraft shelter. The ship has since played a vital role in supporting military operations, disaster relief, and regional engagement, reflecting the RAN’s commitment to versatile and responsive maritime capabilities.
