Collection: HMAS Ovens
HMAS Ovens was an Oberon-class submarine commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in 1969. Built in Scotland, she was one of the six submarines that transformed Australia’s undersea warfare capabilities. Ovens was involved in a range of operations, from anti-submarine warfare exercises to intelligence-gathering missions, often working closely with allied navies. Her advanced technology and stealth made her a valuable asset during the tense years of the Cold War, and her crews were known for their professionalism and adaptability.
Ovens served until 1995, after which she was decommissioned and preserved as a museum ship at the Western Australian Maritime Museum in Fremantle. Visitors can explore her interior and learn about the challenges and achievements of Australia’s submariners. HMAS Ovens stands as a tribute to the vital role submarines have played in Australia’s maritime defence and as a reminder of the dedication of those who served aboard her.
