HMAS Choules was commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in December 2011, having previously served with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary as RFA Largs Bay. The amphibious Bay Class Landing Ship Dock (LSD) was acquired by Australia following a successful bid in 2011 and was named in honour of Chief Petty Officer Claude Choules, who served in both the Royal Navy and the RAN and was the last known living participant of World War I. Notably, Choules is only the second RAN vessel to be named after an enlisted sailor, marking a significant recognition of service at all ranks.

Choules is a 16,000-tonne amphibious ship capable of carrying over 300 troops, 23 Abrams tanks, 150 light trucks, and two landing craft. She is also equipped to operate Navy helicopters, including the MH-60R Seahawk and the Australian Army’s S-70A Black Hawk, making her a critical asset for amphibious operations and humanitarian missions. After joining the RAN, Choules underwent extensive modifications to meet Australian requirements, including upgrades to propulsion, cooling, and safety systems, as well as the addition of new equipment. Since then, she has played a vital role in military operations, disaster relief, and regional engagement, reflecting the RAN’s commitment to versatile and responsive maritime capabilities.
