The expansion of the Flinders Naval Depot at Crib Point was initially intended to serve as a major Royal Australian Navy (RAN) destroyer and submarine base, as well as a training facility. However, dredging operations in Hanns Inlet were halted in 1915 when crews encountered limestone. However, construction on the base had already begun, with the first sod turned in 1913.
The base was officially opened and commissioned on 1 September 1920, however the idea of using it as a Major Fleet Base had been abandoned. Known as “the Cradle of the Navy,” HMAS Cerberus remains vital to RAN operations. It serves as the primary training ground for survivability and ship safety, maritime logistics health, engineering, signalling, and other essential disciplines that ensure the Navy’s capability to operate effectively at sea. Today, it trains approximately 6,000 personnel annually across Navy-specific and tri-service schools.
