Commissioned in 1964, HMAS Derwent was a River-class destroyer escort named after Tasmania’s Derwent River. Known for her versatility and reliability, Derwent served the Royal Australian Navy for three decades, including 23 deployments to South East Asia, operations during the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation, and participation in major fleet exercises. She was the first RAN ship fitted with the Seacat guided missile system, marking a significant leap in air defence capability, and was recognised for excellence with awards such as the Commodore TE Wardle Cup and the Duke of Gloucester’s Cup.
After a major modernisation in the 1980s, Derwent continued to serve with upgraded sensors and improved living conditions for her crew. Decommissioned in 1994, she went on to support ship survivability research before being scuttled off the coast of Western Australia. Remembered fondly by all who served in her, HMAS Derwent’s legacy endures as a proud chapter in the history of the Royal Australian Navy.
