HMAS Hobart (II) DDG39 Men's Hoodie (style Alpha)

HMAS Hobart (II) was a Charles F. Adams-class guided missile destroyer, commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in 1965. Renowned for her advanced missile and radar systems, Hobart was at the forefront of naval technology during her service.

For me, Hobart carries profound personal significance. My father served as a sailor (Radio Operator) on her during the Vietnam War, a period marked by extraordinary service and sacrifice. Hobart undertook three deployments to Vietnam, providing vital naval gunfire support and enduring the tragic friendly fire incident in 1968, which claimed the lives of her crew and left an indelible mark on all who served, including my Dad.

When introducing my future husband (an officer) to my non-officer-approving father, there was an air of slight tension. When scrutinised about his service history and discovering they had in fact served on HMAS Hobart roughly 20 years apart, an old photo album (I’d never known about), and the good whiskey came out.

Beyond Vietnam, Hobart continued to serve as an integral part of Australia’s naval presence throughout the Cold War. She participated in numerous exercises and deployments, enhancing Australia’s maritime security and fostering international cooperation. After a long and distinguished career, Hobart was decommissioned in 2000 and scuttled in Yankalilla Bay, South Australia. Her service is commemorated by the many decorations and battle honours she received, and her name continues to inspire pride within the Royal Australian Navy.
