HMAS Onslow was an Oberon-class submarine commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in 1969. Built in Scotland, Onslow was one of six submarines that formed the backbone of Australia’s underwater fleet during the Cold War. Renowned for her stealth and reliability, Onslow participated in numerous exercises and patrols, both in Australian waters and throughout the Asia-Pacific region. She was equipped with advanced sonar, torpedoes, and electronic surveillance systems, making her a formidable asset for anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and surveillance missions. Onslow’s crew developed a reputation for professionalism and innovation, often operating in challenging conditions and pushing the limits of submarine endurance.
Onslow had a distinguished career spanning nearly three decades, contributing significantly to Australia’s maritime security and defence diplomacy. She was decommissioned in 1999 and preserved as a museum ship at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney. Today, visitors can explore her interior and gain insight into the demanding life of submariners, ensuring that Onslow’s legacy endures as an important chapter in Australia’s naval history.
