HMAS Otway was the second Oberon-class submarine commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy, entering service in 1968. Built in the United Kingdom, Otway was part of Australia’s effort to modernise its submarine force during the Cold War. She was equipped with state-of-the-art sonar, torpedoes, and navigation systems, making her highly effective for anti-submarine warfare and patrol duties. Otway participated in numerous exercises with allied navies and was instrumental in developing the RAN’s submarine tactics and training programs.
After nearly two decades of service, Otway was decommissioned in 1994. Her upper casing, fin, and stern are preserved and on display in Holbrook, New South Wales, serving as a unique memorial and educational exhibit. The display honours both Otway’s service and the town’s namesake, Lieutenant Norman Holbrook, a World War I submariner. HMAS Otway’s legacy endures through her contributions to Australia’s naval capabilities and the ongoing public engagement with her preserved section.
