HMAS Oxley (II) was the lead boat of the Oberon-class submarines in the Royal Australian Navy, commissioned in 1967. Built in the United Kingdom, she marked the beginning of a new era for Australia’s submarine service, replacing the earlier and less capable vessels. Oxley was designed for long-range patrols, anti-submarine warfare, and intelligence missions, featuring advanced sonar, weaponry, and living conditions for her crew. She participated in numerous exercises with allied navies, helping to establish Australia’s reputation as a capable and reliable partner in undersea operations.

Oxley served until 1992, when she was decommissioned after 25 years of service. Her career saw significant developments in submarine technology and tactics, and she played a foundational role in training generations of Australian submariners. The name Oxley continues to be honoured in the RAN, reflecting the enduring legacy of the Oberon-class in shaping Australia’s modern submarine force.
