HMAS Perth (II) was another Charles F. Adams-class guided missile destroyer, commissioned in 1965 alongside her sister ship Hobart (II). Perth was heavily involved in the Vietnam War, where she provided vital naval gunfire support and operated in challenging combat conditions. Her service in Vietnam earned her several battle honours and the respect of both her crew and allied forces. Perth continued to play a crucial role in regional security during the Cold War, participating in joint exercises and patrols that reinforced Australia’s commitment to its allies.
Throughout her operational life, Perth demonstrated the value of missile-equipped destroyers in modern naval warfare. She was a mainstay of the fleet, adapting to new technologies and missions as required. After more than three decades of service, Perth was decommissioned in 1999. Her legacy is marked by her steadfast service, her role in shaping Australia’s modern navy, and the strong bonds formed by her crew during challenging deployments.
