HMAS Sydney (IV) was an Adelaide-class guided missile frigate, commissioned in 1983 as part of Australia’s efforts to modernise its naval forces. Sydney quickly became a key asset in both combat and peacekeeping operations, reflecting the versatility and reach of the Adelaide class. She participated in the Gulf War, enforcing sanctions and protecting shipping, and later contributed to peacekeeping missions in East Timor and regional security operations in the Solomon Islands. Sydney also played a role in the War in Afghanistan and the 2003 invasion of Iraq, my husband amongst her crew at the time, demonstrating her adaptability to a wide range of missions.

Sydney was known for her operational excellence and for fostering strong relationships with allied navies during multinational exercises and deployments. After more than three decades of service, she was decommissioned in 2015, closing a significant chapter in the history of Australian naval operations. The legacy of Sydney endures in the professionalism and camaraderie of her crew and in the continued tradition of service associated with her name in the Royal Australian Navy.
