Commissioned in 1959, HMAS Vampire was the last of the Royal Australian Navy’s big gun destroyers and a formidable Daring-class warship. She patrolled through periods of tension during the Cold War, served in escort and training roles, and represented Australia at international naval events throughout the Pacific and Southeast Asia. With her distinctive sleek lines and triple 4.5-inch gun turrets, Vampire was a symbol of strength and precision.
Though she never fired in anger, Vampire played a vital role in preserving maritime stability during a transformative era in Navy history. Her duties included deployment with the British Far East Strategic Reserve and operations out of Singapore during Indonesia’s Konfrontasi.
Decommissioned in 1986, HMAS Vampire now rests at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney. As a museum ship, she stands as a powerful reminder of the Navy’s heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into the life and legacy of sailors who served aboard her—my Dad’s best mate amongst them.
From sailors standing watch to gun crews at the ready, Vampire was a proud sentinel of Australian interests—resilient, reliable, and resolutely RAN.
