Commissioned in 2001, HMAS Warramunga is an Anzac-class frigate named after the Warumungu people of the Northern Territory. She upholds the legacy of her predecessor—a Tribal-class destroyer that saw distinguished combat service in World War II and Korea. As a modern warship, Warramunga is equipped for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, helicopter operations, long-range patrols, and joint exercises. Her advanced suite includes phased array radars, guided missiles, and a 127mm main gun, allowing her to operate effectively from coastal waters to open ocean.
Warramunga has played a key role in multinational operations, including deployments to the Persian Gulf for maritime security and counter-piracy missions in Somali waters—just a few among the many deployments my husband took part in. She was among the first RAN vessels assigned to protect international trade lanes and participate in major exercises such as RIMPAC. Reflecting continuous innovation, Warramunga was one of the first ships to receive the Anti-Ship Missile Defence (ASMD) upgrade, enhancing her survivability and combat capabilities. Bearing the motto “Courage in Difficulties,” HMAS Warramunga embodies resilience, tradition, and the evolving strength of Australia’s fleet.
