The Royal Australian Navy Recruit School was established on land at HMAS Cerberus in September 1920. Prior to this, from 1912 until 1925, new sailors were trained aboard the clipper ship HMAS Tingira, which served as the initial training ship for naval recruits. Tingira provided hands-on experience at sea, teaching basic seamanship and naval skills before the Navy transitioned to shore-based training at Cerberus. Since opening, HMAS Cerberus has been the Navy’s main training base and has developed into a large and well-equipped facility. Over the past century, it has trained more than 120,000 sailors, my father amongst them – and what an experience it was taking him back through his old block when my husband was posted in a leadership role at the school in 2018.
Recruits learn fundamental military skills including discipline, teamwork, naval customs, seamanship, and leadership – while internalising the Navy values of Honour, Honesty, Courage, Integrity, and Loyalty.
Commanded by experienced officers, Navy Recruit School is regarded as a challenging but highly supportive environment designed to prepare recruits for both the demands and rewards of naval service. Successful completion is both a rite of passage and the start of a lifelong journey in the Royal Australian Navy.
